Schema Therapy for Individuals Training Program

The International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST) outlines a rigorous certification process for therapists seeking to specialize in Schema Therapy. Below is a summary of the key requirements, procedures, and policies for ISST certification:
 
General Certification Requirements
 
1.Membership Requirement:
 
Applicants must be ISST members (Full membership for most certifications; Associate membership for Auxiliary Schema Therapist certification).
 
2.Academic Qualification:
 
A Master’s degree or equivalent in psychology, social work, or related fields is required. Exceptions may apply based on country-specific psychotherapy practices.
 
3.Training and Supervision:
 
Standard Certification: 20 hours of supervision, treatment of at least 2 patients (minimum 25 therapy hours each), and submission of 1 recorded session with a case conceptualization.
 
Advanced Certification: 40 hours of supervision, treatment of at least 4 patients, and submission of 2 recorded sessions with case conceptualizations.
 
•Minimum competency scores on the Schema Therapist Competency Rating Scale (STCRS) are required (4.0 for Standard; 4.5 for Advanced).
 
Time Limits for Certification
 
1.Candidates must apply for Standard Certification within 3 years of completing basic training.
 
2.Advanced Certification must be pursued within an additional 2 years after obtaining Standard Certification.
 
3.Extensions require proof of continuing education, supervision, or case presentations.
 
Application Process
 
1.Applications must be submitted to the Regional/National Coordinator along with:
 
•ISST application form.
 
•Checklist of required documentation.
 
•Case conceptualizations and session summaries.
 
•Supervisor confirmation of supervision hours.
 
2.Documents must be submitted in English if the coordinator is not fluent in the applicant’s language.
 
3.Applications are reviewed by the Regional Coordinator before being sent to the ISST Certification Coordinator for final evaluation.
 
Evaluation and Approval
 
1.Reviewers assess qualifications and ensure all documentation is complete.
 
2.Approved applications result in certification letters and certificates sent by ISST.
 
3.Denied applications can be appealed through the Executive Board or Conflict Resolution Committee.
 
Specialty Certifications
 
Separate processes exist for Group, Child-Adolescent, Couples, and Auxiliary Schema Therapy certifications, reviewed by specific committees.
